This summer, Cardinal Spellman High School, a private Catholic high school in Brockton, MA, partnered with The Wilkinson Companies and Acella Construction to tackle a major facilities project: upgrading their aging heating system. Established in 1958, Cardinal Spellman has invested heavily in modernizing its facilities over the years, including updates to its football field, library, and fitness center. Replacing the 30-year-old heating system was the next step in ensuring a comfortable, energy-efficient environment for its students and staff.
Boiler Room Transformation
The school’s facilities team, led by Director Bill Pacitto, recognized the need for new equipment to replace the outdated system. Timing was crucial - completing the project over the summer ensured that everything would be operational before classes resumed in the fall.
To oversee the work, Cardinal Spellman chose Acella Construction as the general contractor, with Wilkinson’s Installation and Service teams handling the boiler room overhaul.
“We replaced two boilers, three expansion tanks, a large air scoop, and two large circulating pumps,” explained Jay Higgins, Sales Engineer at The Wilkinson Companies. “The Cardinal Spellman staff had the boiler room gutted, cleaned, and painted before the equipment was rigged in with a crane. Both the boilers and the new circulating pumps qualified for Mass Save rebates from gas and electric utilities.”
Advanced Equipment for a High-Efficiency System
The upgraded boiler room now features:
- Two Riello Array 4000 high-efficiency condensing boilers
- Two Armstrong Fluid Technologies variable speed pumps
- Three bladder-type expansion tanks
- One Vortex air separator
This state-of-the-art setup was installed and operational by the end of August, just in time for the new school year.
Collaboration and Excellence
Facilities Director Bill Pacitto praised the teamwork involved in this project:
“Working with Wilkinson was a positive experience. Everyone was professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. We hope to partner with them for future upgrades.”
